4th Grade Q & A |
Answers to our most commonly asked questions.
|
Does the agenda need to be signed every night?
No, although we have in the past we won't be requiring a signature every night. However, if your child loses a paw, we want you to be aware of the situation and have an opportunity to discuss with your child the choices he/she is making. This will then be considered part of that day's homework. If they do not get the signature, they will lose another paw.
Why does my child lose a "paw" for not having the agenda signed?
As mentioned above, if your child loses a paw, we will then request a signature as part of their homework. We expect your child to communicate with you about what's happening at school. When they do not ask you to get their agenda signed, they are not fulfilling their obligations.
Why must my kid bring a healthy snack?
As a school, we are doing our best to help establish and support healthy eating habits.
How much homework should I expect my child to have?
On average homework should be a daily uninterrupted thirty to forty-five minutes session. If homework completion becomes a problem for your child, please contact your child's teacher to discuss possible options.
How much and how should I help my child with homework?
Homework is intended to be practice of what we are working in class. They should be able to do the work independently. However, sometimes they might struggle. If that's the case, we would love for you to support your child as needed on their homework. Reminders of strategies, clarifying directions, checking for completion etc. However, we don’t want WWIII at your house because of homework. If your kiddo is really struggling or does not even know how to approach the problem consider one of these options:
As always, let your teachers know if you have questions or concerns.
- Are there notes from class that can help? Ask your child to bring home their journals for support (just make sure they get returned to school daily!)
- Is their information in a text book? Ask your child to bring home their textbook, just promise to return it daily.
- Write a note to the teacher. We will provide support in ROAR time or study hall!
As always, let your teachers know if you have questions or concerns.
What field trips are scheduled in 4th Grade?
In the fall we have scheduled a field trip to the Paramount Theater. We also have the Austin Nature Center and the Texas State Cemetery scheduled for the spring. Please check the calendar for specific dates.
We are working with Keep Austin Beautiful to schedule a field trip to "Bear Lake" which is right behind Baldwin. The Symphony and a trip to Umlauf museum are also part of the 4th grade field trips but have not been scheduled as this time.

Do you need chaperons for every field trip?
Not every field trip requires chaperons. We will sent notice of when we do.
Do I need a background check to chaperon a field trip?
Yes, you do. This is a district policy to ensure the safety of all children. Please keep in mind that this needs to be done at least two weeks prior. Please go here and click on the "Volunteer" button to complete a background check.
Why do I need a background check to volunteer and/or chaperon?
It is our district's policy in order to help ensure safety at our schools.
What are some ways I can volunteer at 4th grade?
Our biggest area of need is making copies, laminating and chaperons for field trips. Check with your child's teacher for specific ways to help.
How does 4th grade celebrate birthdays?
We usually sing the Happy Birthday song and sometimes we might even dance a little. Birthday celebrations are done sometime after lunch in the classroom or at recess. You are welcome to bring cupcakes, cookies, brownies or doughnuts - something easy to distribute to everyone in the classroom. Please check with your child's teacher for possible food allergies.
Can I bring cupcakes or donuts to celebrate my child's birthday?
Yes you can! However, this has to be done in the classroom after lunch, preferably at the end of the day. Check with your child's teacher for food allergies you might need to take into consideration. For more information on birthday celebrations you can view the district policy by clicking here.
Can my child give out birthday invitations?
Yes, they may as long as invitations are given to every child in the classroom. If the invitations are for just a few kids, then they must be distributed elsewhere.
How can we access Google Drive and/or Google Classroom from home?
First of all, what's the difference between the drive and the classroom?
The drive is where you keep all of your work. It's automatically saved. That's my favorite thing about it. From the drive you can create documents, slide shows, and more. The classroom only needs to be accessed when a teacher tells you to look there for an assignment.
1. Log on to the AISD cloud.
A. Using Google Chrome, type this in the address bar:
my.austinisd.org
B. When the blue cloud access screen appears, you will log in to your personal account.
1. Your user name is your student ID, but don't forget to type an "s" in front of the that number.
2. Your password is made up of the following combination:
Capital letter of your last name + 6 digits that represent your birthday + "s"
Example:
Sally Johnson User name: s1004678
Password: J101505s
C. Now you are in the cloud!! :)
D. To get to Google Drive or Classroom, go to the search space (looks like a hand lens) and type the word Google, and a few options will pop up. Click on the one you need.
